# What is GEO? A practical guide beyond the acronym.

**Author:** [BeeCited](https://beecited.agency/about#beecited-editorial)

Generative engine optimization is the work of making a business easier to find, understand and reference in AI-generated answers. It combines a good website with useful content, consistent business information and evidence beyond the site.

## The question changed. Your customer didn’t.

A customer can still search for a service in Google. They can also ask an assistant which provider fits their situation, what to compare and what to avoid. The answer may present a few options before the person visits any website.

That makes it useful to ask a different marketing question: what information would help someone understand and evaluate our business? A page full of broad claims gives them little to work with. A clear description of the service, its limits and the evidence behind it is more useful wherever the information is read.

GEO is a name for working on that presence. The research paper that introduced the term studies visibility in generative-engine responses; it is not a universal recipe or a guarantee for every commercial AI product.

## GEO and SEO share a foundation.

Google says its existing SEO practices remain relevant to AI features; there is no extra technical requirement for those features. An accessible, useful site still matters.

The additional practical task is to inspect how a brand is represented across sources and answers. Are the right services mentioned? Are the facts accurate? Are relevant pages cited? Do visitors who arrive understand the offer and know what to do next?

| Question | SEO lens | GEO lens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Discovery | Can the relevant page be found in search? | Does the business appear in relevant AI answers? |
| Content | Does the page satisfy the searcher’s task? | Can the answer use specific, verifiable information? |
| Measurement | Impressions, clicks and useful visits | Mentions, citations and referred visits, tracked separately |

## A programme needs more than a new label.

At BeeCited, we organize the work into five connected pieces. This is our operating approach, not a published list of ranking factors.

- Website: remove confirmed access, rendering and indexing problems; make important information readable.
- Content: explain the actual offer, answer buying questions and support factual claims.
- Brand facts: align names, services, descriptions and links across relevant profiles.
- External evidence: look for appropriate publications, reviews and sources where others can evaluate the business.
- Measurement: keep a repeatable question set and separate brand mentions, URL citations and visits.

1. Website
2. Clear answers
3. Independent sources
4. Measured visibility

A working model, not a ranking formula.

## What does useful content look like?

Compare “we deliver innovative digital solutions” with a page that states the exact service, who it is for, what is included and how the work is checked. The second gives a potential customer enough information to judge whether to enquire.

For a specialist service, include the questions you answer repeatedly in sales calls. Explain the trade-offs. Show the deliverables. If you use a number, say how it was obtained. A short, specific answer can be stronger than an essay that never reaches a conclusion.

An example: a website-development page can explain whether it includes only frontend work, which integrations are in scope and who owns the code. That clarity helps the reader first. Treat possible citation as a reason to be precise, not a reason to write awkwardly.

## What GEO can — and can’t — promise.

You can promise agreed work: an audit, published pages, technical fixes, profile updates and measurement. You can report observed changes under stated conditions. You cannot control which business an independent AI system recommends for every user.

Be cautious with a “top in ChatGPT” offer that does not define the question, market, model, date or test method. A single favourable screenshot says little about repeatability. Also ask whether a quoted price includes a rebuild, paid tools, placements or advertising spend.

A useful proposal tells you where the business is starting, what will be done, what remains outside the scope and how progress will be checked.

## Start with a baseline, then fix a real gap.

Write down a small set of non-branded questions a buyer might actually ask. Check the relevant answers and save the sources. Then inspect your own most important pages. Can someone identify the business, understand the service and verify the claims?

If the site is inaccessible or confusing, begin there. If it is clear but the surrounding information is inconsistent, work on the profiles and sources. A new website is not automatically the right first investment.

GEO becomes useful when it changes concrete work and the way it is measured. It becomes noise when it merely renames ordinary marketing tasks without explaining why they matter.

- [How much does GEO cost — and what should you pay for?](https://beecited.agency/blog/generative-engine-optimization-cost): At BeeCited, turnkey GEO starts at $1,500 for the project. For an agreed three-month project at that price, payment can be split into $500 per month. What matters is the work behind the price: your website, content, public brand information and a way to check progress.
- [How to measure AI visibility without fooling yourself.](https://beecited.agency/blog/how-to-measure-ai-search-visibility): Measure brand mentions, website citations, referred visits and qualified inquiries separately. Use a fixed question set, save the original answers and record the test conditions. A visibility percentage means little without its denominator.
