Four events, four different meanings.
A brand mention shows that the answer names a business. A citation connects the answer to a source URL. A referral is a visit that reaches the site. A qualified inquiry is a business opportunity. None automatically proves the next.
A report should keep them apart. Otherwise, ten cited answers and zero visits can be presented as ten new customers — a conclusion the data does not support.
| Event | What to record | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Mention | Brand named; description and relevance | Recommendation or a visit |
| Citation | Source URL and its role in the answer | Brand preference |
| Referral | Session source and useful site behaviour | A qualified lead |
| Inquiry | Confirmed delivery and fit with the offer | Causation by one GEO change |
Build a question set that resembles demand.
Start with buying situations, not vanity checks. Include questions about the category, comparisons and the problems your service solves. Label branded and non-branded questions separately.
Use the markets and languages the business serves. Write down why each question belongs in the set. A small relevant sample can be useful; a huge list of unrelated prompts creates a bigger number, not necessarily better evidence.
Keep the set stable for comparisons. When you revise it, retain a view of the old set so that changes in sampling are not mistaken for changes in visibility.
Save the conditions and the answer.
Record the date, platform, product mode, language, market assumptions, exact question and number of repetitions. Save the answer and cited URLs, not just a cropped screenshot of the brand name.
Answers can vary. Use repeat observations and comparable conditions before discussing a trend. Note platform or model changes and any personalization that could affect the test.
This is our measurement protocol for making comparisons more interpretable. It does not make an AI system deterministic or remove every source of bias.
Show the denominator.
If you report mention rate, define it: qualifying answers that name the brand divided by all qualifying answers checked. State what counted as qualifying and how ambiguous mentions were handled.
Illustrative calculation: if a brand appears in 8 of 40 saved answers, its mention rate for that sample is 20%. That is not 20% of a market, users or future recommendations. The example is a calculation, not a BeeCited client result.
For a citation rate, count actual citations under a stated rule. Keep page-level results, since a guide might be cited while a service page is not.

Connect visibility to website data carefully.
When a visit carries a recognizable referral, report it with its landing page and useful actions. Some routes may lack attribution; label that gap rather than assigning every direct visit to AI.
Check the analytics installation before trusting the report. Google recommends methods such as DebugView, Tag Assistant and inspection of collection requests to verify events.
Use a confirmed inquiry event for conversion reporting. Clicking a submit button or opening a thank-you URL is not sufficient evidence of delivery. Keep names, emails and message text out of analytics events.
Make a report that leads to a decision.
A useful monthly view contains the stable question set, sample size, mention and citation counts, source pages, observed inaccuracies and any attributable useful visits. Beside it, show the work completed during the period.
Then state the next action. For example: a service is being misdescribed, so clarify its scope; answers use an outdated directory, so correct that listing; referrals land on an unclear page, so improve that page.
Do not claim that a single content edit caused every observed change. Other marketing work, platform updates and sample variation may be involved. Measurement is valuable when it helps choose the next step, even when it does not produce a dramatic growth chart.
